Summer is finally upon us. It's time to take a break and enjoy the holidays. But if you're an anime fan, summer has a totally different meaning. With a new season comes a plethora of new shows and movies to enjoy inside. From fighting monsters to Makoto Shinkai's latest film and a few fantasy creatures here and there this anime season is going to be jam-packed. Here are 15 anime shows and movies that you wouldn't mind missing your vacation for.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II

One of the big series coming out this summer and anime fans are excited to see come back Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? better known by its nickname DanMachi. The first season aired in 2015 and was an instant hit.

The new season will continue to follow Bell and Hestia on a new adventure. This time around a "War Game" will take place between the Familia of two opposing Gods. The winner takes everything from the loser.

Taking the helm is Hideki Tachibana (Alice in Borderland, Armed Girl's Machiavellism) who will replace Yoshiki Yamakawa as director for the second season at J.C. Staff. Penning the show's script is Date A Live's Hideki Shirane and Shigeki Kimoto (The Familiar of Zero, A Certain Magical Index II) will take the lead on the character design.

If you happen to be at Anime Expo, you're in luck. Sentai Filmworks will screen the second season's first episode at this year's convention.

Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest

Based on the fantasy light novels written by Ryo Shirakome and illustrated by Takayaki, Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest centers around an otaku high school boy named Hajime Nagumo.

One day his life gets turned down when he, along with the entire class, get transported to a fantasy world! They're treated like heroes and defeat any foes that pose a threat to the human race. But what should have been Nagumo's dream quickly turns into his nightmare. While his classmates have godlike powers, Nagumo's gets the role of a Synergist with a single transmutation skill. Can this otaku survive in a world of monsters and demons with only a glorified blacksmith's level of strength?

Initially set to air in 2018, the studio moved production to 2019 due to "various circumstances." The delay saw a switch in the main staff with Kinji Yoshimoto (Queen's Blade) replacing Jun Kamiya (Kingdom) as director.

Dr. Stone

Finally, after months of waiting, Dr. Stone will make its TV premiere this summer. The post-apocalyptic series takes place after a mysterious phenomenon turns all of humanity to stone. The series follows two boys – Senku Ishigami a science-driven boy and his childhood friend Taiju Oki – who awaken to find this petrified world. Now with the power of science, they will try to rebuild civilization from nothing.

Shinya Iino (Made in Abyss) will make his directorial debut at TMS Entertainment (Baki, Zetman). Yuichiro Kido (Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga, 91 Days) will take the lead in writing the series' composition and scripts with Yuko Iwasa (Zetman, Yowamushi Pedal) in charge of character design.  

Fans attending Anime Expo 2019 can enjoy the world premiere of the series on July 4. But if you're not at this year's convention, Crunchyroll will stream the series as it airs.

Fire Force

This anime season is going to be on fire thanks to David Production's Fire Force. In an alternate take of Tokyo, the world's most populous city is seeing its citizens bursting into flames. Luckily, there's a team of specialized firefighters to put out these spontaneous human combustions: the Fire Force.

As part of this special fire brigade, Company 8, is comprised out of flame users and they welcome their latest member, Shinra Kusakabe. But the young man isn't your typical firefighter, he has the power to ignite his feet at will, allowing him to travel at the speed of a rocket. Now, as part of Company 8, he’ll use his ability to help keep Tokyo from turning to ash! But his past and the strange events plaguing Tokyo could set everything ablaze.

Follow the adventures of these brave men and women when Fire Force drops this July.

Vinland Saga

A tale of vengeance and redemption come to life in the summer anime, Vinland Saga. During the era of the Vikings, Thorfinn seeks revenge for his father's death by the mercenary leader Askeladd. The young boy joins Askeladd's group to challenge him to a duel. However, he ends up caught in the middle of a war for the crown of England.

Shūhei Yabuta (Inuyashiki Last Hero) will direct the anime and it will feature animation production by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan). Hiroshi Seko (Banana Fish) is supervising the scripts and writing them with Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil). Taking the lead on character design is Hunter x Hunter's animation director, Takahiko Abiru.

The Vinland Saga manga has a large cult following and with big names in charge of production, we couldn't be more excited to see this bloody epic tale when it airs on this July 7 in Japan and Amazon Prime Video.

Weathering With You

Your Name director, Makoto Shinkai, is coming out with a new slice of life film, Weathering With You. The movie follows high school student, Hodaka Morishima as he moves from a remote island to Tokyo, but he immediately becomes broke. Luckily, he finds a job as a writer for a shady occult magazine. One day he notices that it's been raining for a while when he meets a young girl named Hina Amano. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful gift: the ability to stop the rain and clear the sky.

On top of directing the film, Shinkai is writing the film's script at CoMix Wave Films (The Garden of Words). Masayoshi Tanaka (Anohana) will lend his skills as a character designer with Atsushi Tamura (The Cat Returns) serving as the animation director.

Weathering With You hits theaters in Japan on July 19 and the film will also be released in select U.S. theaters by GKIDS in early 2020.

Given

Ritsuka Uenoyama used to play the guitar but lost interest. One day, he meets Mafuyu Sato and his broken guitar. Ritsuka feels like he has no choice but to teach Mafuyu how to play the instrument. But the magic comes when he hears Mafuyu's singing, it pierces young Ristuka like nothing has before. But despite his incredible talent to incite emotions, Mafuyu finds it difficult to express his own feelings and the answer as to why lies in his past.

Hikaru Yamaguchi (episode director for Mr. Osomatsu) is directing the anime featuring animation production by studio Lerche (Kino's Journey -the Beautiful World- the Animated Series). Yuniko Ayana (Bakuman.) is overseeing the series scripts.

Given is based on a Natsuki Kizu's manga of the same name and will be the first ever Boy Love anime to air in the Noitonima time slot.

The Ones Within

A weird high stakes game comes to play in The Ones Within. The survival game centers around en Akatsuki Iride, a popular live streamer for the free-to-play game "The Ones Within-Genome." But things take a turn when he and seven other game streamers wake up inside Genome. Now Iride and the other streamers are competing in real-life games with life-or-death challenges to get 100 million views. Will they succeed and make it back to the real world?

Shin Ōnuma (Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya) will direct the series and it's set to air on July 7. SILVER LINK (Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody) is in charge of producing the anime.  Joining Ōnuma at SILVER LINK are series composition writer Kento Shimoyama (We Rent Tsukumogami) and character designer Mizuki Takahashi (animation director for Masamune-kun's Revenge). The Ones Within is also coming to Funimation as part of the Summer 2019 lineup.

Astra Lost in Space

In 2061, space travel is possible and commercially viable. Eight students from Caird High School and one child embark on their planet camp excursion.

While there a mysterious and unforeseen sentient light sphere warps 9 children into outer space, stranding them 5000 light years in the middle of nowhere! With no way to call for help, they decide to aboard an old, unmanned spaceship they call Astra. The group must stay strong in the cold darkness of space, to make the dangerous journey back home.

Masaomi Ando (Scum's Wish) will serve as director for the survival anime, alongside series composition writer Norimitsu Kaihou (School-Live!) and anime character designer Keiko Kurosawa (Asobi Asobase). Together they will produce the anime at anime studio Lerche (Assassination Classroom).

Human Lost

  • Premiere date: July 5 (Anime Expo)
  • Studio: Polygon Pictures
  • Genre(s): Drama, Historical, Psychological, Seinen

In 2036, science has evolved to the extent that death doesn't exist anymore.  This cure is thanks to internal nanomachines and the "S.H.E.L.L." system. However, only the richest can afford to avoid the grim reaper.

The technology extends the patient's lifespan to 120. But as a result, it has changed the Japanese society: economic disparities, severe environmental pollution and the "Human Lost" phenomenon those disconnected from the S.H.E.L.L. network become malformed.

Yozo Oba is troubled by strange dreams, he joins his friend's biker gang and rides to "The Inside," an exclusive community for the society's wealthiest citizens. However, Yozo will get more than he bargained for.

Afro Samurai director Fuminori Kizaki is taking the helm at Polygon Pictures (Knights of Sidonia) with Tow Ubukata (Psycho-Pass 2) writing the film's script. The cyberpunk movie will premiere at Anime Expo 2019 on July 5. Funimation will screen the film in theaters in the U.S. this fall.

BEM

  • Premiere date: July 8

  • Genre(s): Demons, Horror, Supernatural

What do you do when creepy monsters go bump in the night you'll find out this summer on BEM. The supernatural adventure anime centers around Bem, Bela, and Belo three supernatural creatures (yōkai) who fight for justice. They live among humans and protect them from evil monsters. Because of this, they find themselves ostracized from both humans and other yōkai. Even so, the trio continues to fight in hopes of one-day becoming humans themselves.

This will be the third adaptation of the supernatural series. The original aired in 1968 and a remake in 2006. The new BEM is directed by Yoshinori Odaka (Armed Blue Gunvolt)and features animation production by LandQ Studios (Sword Gai: The Animation).

To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts

  • Premiere date: July 1
  • Studio: MAPPA
  • Genre(s): Action, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen

Based on the manga of the same name, the story of To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts begins when a violent civil war erupts between the Northern Union of Patria and the Southern Confederation of Patria. The outnumbered Northerners used forbidden technology to create monstrous super-soldiers called Incarnates.

Celebrated as heroes, these monsters are now feared by humans due to their overwhelming power and are now called Beasts. These creatures must now learn to live in a peaceful society or face death at the hands of the Beast Hunters. Nancy, the daughter of an Incarnate, turns to hunt the hunter herself. But once she catches up with her target, she discovers something that will change her life.

Jun Shishido (episode director for Death Parade) is making his series directorial debut with this anime at MAPPA, and Shigeru Murakoshi (Zombie Land Saga) is in charge of the series scripts. Daisuke Niinuma (episode animation director for Banana Fish) is designing the characters.

Cop Craft

  • Premiere date: July 9
  • Studio: Millepensee
  • Genre(s): Action, Fantasy, Magic, Police, Sci-Fi

Out of nowhere, a hyperspace gate opened over the Pacific. Beyond it lies Reto Semaani, a strange alternate world where fairies and demons live. With the cooperation of both worlds, a new city is erect, San-Teresa, where over two million immigrants live from both worlds.

While San-Teresa gets the name "city of dreams" crime is rampant: drugs, murder and human trafficking.

The humans and otherworld creatures who stand up to these heinous crimes are in the San Teresa City Police. When detective Kei Matoba and the alternate-world knight Tirana meet, it isn't a match made in heaven. Even so, they do their best to keep the citizens of San-Teresa safe.

Shin Itagaki (2016 Berserk) is directing the manga-inspired anime at Millepensee (2016 Berserk), and Shoji Gatoh, the series' original creator in charge of the script. The fantasy "buddy cop" series will air on July 9.

Hensuki: Are you willing to fall in love with a pervert, as long as she’s a cutie?

Once upon a time, Cinderella left a note and her panties in a boy’s locker…wait, what?! That isn't how the story goes! Keiki Kiryu receives a mysterious love letter, with no sender but includes a pair of white underwear. Curious to find the identity of his secret admirer, Keiki's investigation leads him to discover that every candidate is a total pervert! Surrounded by depravity, needs to answer an important question: who’s the perfect fit?

Itsuki Imazaki (Magical Somera-chan) is directing the anime at Geek Toys (RErideD). Kenichi Yamashita (Holmes of Kyoto) is supervising the anime's script. Yōsuke Itō (King's Game The Animation) is designing the characters and is also the chief animation director.

The romantic comedy of an ordinary high school boy and his potential female suitor airs on July 8.

Ensemble Stars!

Yumenosaki Private Academy specializes in boys' idol training. The school has a long and successful history of producing generations of idols creating countless fans across the country. But things are turned upside down when a new transfer student arrives who happens to be a girl. She's chosen to be the school's first student of the "producer course."

Junpaku Yagurashita (episode director for Mobile Suit Gundam UC) is directing the anime with Yasufumi Soejima as series director at David's Production (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure). Shinichi Inotsume (Persona 5 the Animation) is the chief writer.

The idol-making anime will premiere on July 7.
